Shareware Registration Service Comparison

Conclusions for busy shareware authors

  • If you are serious about affiliate program, and do not care about the annoying CD Delivery & Download Insurance options, you can use RegNow 6.9% Plan.

  • If you are serious about affiliate program, but want to avoid the CD Delivery & Download Insurance options, you can use SWREG or Plimus as your major registration service. And then you setup your-domain.net as a mirror of your-domain.com (Apache skill required) to apply RegNow 6.9% Plan.

  • If you are using third party affiliate network like Shareasale or Commission Junction, eMetrix is your best choice. SWREG can also integration these 3rd party tracking codes as long as you want to custom a dozen of templates.

  • If you do not want to use affiliate program, both Plimus and SWREG are good enouth. By the way, Plimus has an affiliate network, too.

We are a competitive payment processor called Digitalcandle. Our website is digitalcandle.com, we would like to be added to this site. Our rates and features are competitive with the other sites listed.

Actually, I don’t think DigitalCandle is in business anymore. When you go to their web site to their developer section and write to the developers email, it just bounces back as dead. When I wrote to the one email that I could find on their site that didn’t bounce back no one has ever replied, and its been two weeks.

How does someone submit a shareware registration service to be added to the site? Is there a submission process?

I’ve been using Share-It, their customer service is crap. Their generated HTML has a bunch of errors in it which makes payment page customization a nightmare. And in stead of fixing the problem customer service will basically tell you you’re an idiot.

Thank you Share-It, I will look for another payment processor.

There’s some interesting reading on the comparisons here, but it’s by no means the whole story when it comes to choosing a registration service. As an affiliate site author, running www.BitsDuJour.com I’ve interfaced with all of these e-commerce providers and more that are not on the list. Most of them do a reasonable job, however mistakes invariably happen. Orders get lost, customers get ticked off, fraud happens and servers go down.

No nobody can get it right all of the time but the main factor for me is knowing that I can get in contact with my e-commerce provider and have them return my call. It’s a sad state that the majority of the providers are simply not available on the phone, or if they are they will not return your phone call for days, or worse forget about you entirely. I’ve had this happen time and time again, and I’ve seen posts on forums from many people asking ‘How to I get in contact with such-and-such a provider’ from a frustrated ISV who can’t stand it any more.

I recently had a case where an e-commerce provider overpaid me ten times the amount that I should have been. After finally getting through to their customer service I was finally directed to leave a message on a voicemail of someone who was out on vacation, and this was due to their mistake in a huge overpayment of thousands of dollars - I was calling to save them the money! What if this had been an issue that had affected my business directly?

My advice, before you settle on a provider is to give them a call. See how they treat you on the phone. It’s a buyer’s market and I’d want someone who respects and values my business. Will they call you back, and will they take your concerns seriously? They all do they same thing so they only difference is in customer service. I don’t mind paying a few more dollars to get it.
